The ‘GIRLS und PANZER’ movie is probably one of my most favorite films of all time. I’ve actually watched this movie a dozen times, maybe even more. Sometimes I’ll just feel like popping this film into my blu-ray player and watching all of it. Of course the same could be said for the entire series.
So let’s just get started and talk about it!
‘GIRLS und PANZER der Film’ begins with ‘Oarai’ tankery girls in a battle with ‘Pravda’ and ‘St. Gloriana’. ‘Oarai’ is battling along side ‘Chi Hatan’. Later, after the match, all the girls are informed that ‘Oarai’ would be shutting down. All the girls are confused, considering they had won the tournament not that long ago. With the school shut down, the girls of ‘Oarai’ are given one more shot to keep their school open. They must defeat an ‘All-Stars University Team’.
When this anime first starts, we actually see the girls from ‘Oarai’ in battle along side a new tankery team called ‘Chi Hatan’. I call them ‘new’, simply because I don’t remember them being named in the first season of the show, but I could have missed that.
Anyways these two teams have come together in order to defeat ‘St. Gloriana’ and ‘Pravda’. This match is a friendly one as well.
The funny thing about ‘Chi Hatan’ is the fact that they are obsessed with charging, but because of this most of their forces end up getting blow away. I actually like the girls from ‘Chi Hatan’ because the leader ‘Nishi Kinuyo’, is actually pretty nice. I also like how she listens to the other girls under her command.
The first match we see actually lasts around twenty-minutes in length and I won’t spoil how it ends.
Anyways once the girls finish their match, ‘Oarai’s’ student counsel president is called away. Later it’s revealed that their school is getting shut down. Not only that, but all their tanks were going to be taken as well.
So as the movie continues, the girls do eventually get their tanks back and we see the girls living relatively normal lives. They are stuck at a different school on land. We do learn that Miho is a huge fan of a character named ‘Punchy’ or ‘Boko’ in Japanese. ‘Punchy’ is a bear character who gets beat up a lot, but keeps coming back for more.
This film isn’t actually the first time we hear of ‘Punchy’. We actually see him a few times in the first season (as a stuffed bear), and Miho does mention him during one of the OVA’s. The girls even travel to a ‘Punchy Museum’. While at this museum Miho comes face-to-face with a girl named ‘Alice’.
The reason why I’m bring up Alice, is because after ‘Anzu’ strong arms the MEXT, the girls are told that they have a chance to save their school by battling an ‘All-Star University Team’. I actually love this moment in the anime, because once the MEXT says something about defeating such a team, Anzu pulls out a pen and is ready to write out a contract. Anzu even uses his own words against him.
I’m skipping ahead here, because I do want to talk about my next favorite moment in this film. ‘Oarai’ is told that they have to do something called an ’annihilation’ match, which means that the small amount of tanks they have, would somehow have to defeat thirty of this pro-teams.
My favorite moment actually involves all the other schools that ’Oarai’ had defeated in the past, coming together to help ’Oarai’. Even though the MEXT complained, the only one who could raise an objection was Alice, who was the commander of the ‘All-Star University Team’ and she didn’t do it! She allowed all the tanks to participate. I really love that, because it showed what kind of commander she was.
There really isn’t much to say about the ‘All-Star University Team’ except that they are really good. The commander herself is also really impressive.
I do want to take a moment and talk about ‘Jatkosota’. This team only consists of three girls and one tank. I wasn’t sure what to think about them at first considering their commander, ‘Mika’, doesn’t seem to enjoy tank battles. She’s not the kind of girl who complains, or whine about them, but she also doesn’t seem to enjoy them. She’s also very contradictory. Still when push comes to shove, they are pretty good.
So as you can imagine, I’ve been skipping over several parts of this film. The reason for that is because I want to avoid spoilers as much as possible. This movie is a lot of fun and even though I know how it ends, I always get a bit nervous. Which is weird right?
Still that should tell people how much I enjoy this game. Getting nervous despite knowing how this movie ends, is a good sign that it’s amazing!
I have to recommend checking out these movies! I keep saying it, but they are fun to watch!
Thanks for reading everyone!
Take care!
